For this document I will be looking into the techniques and processes for audio. For each part of the document will be split into a heading with them being: Equipment. Techniques, Role of Foley artists, Sound format, Storage, Compression, Size versus Quality.

Equipment

There are different types of equipment used for making different types of sounds. Microphones are used to record any Foley tracks, voice overs and scripted speech. This allows to make the audience hear the audio more clearly without any unnecessary background noise happening. Headphones are used to check out the audio for any mistakes that might have been made during the recording of the audio. Boom poles can be used to keep the mic on a certain distance and height which can free the hands of the person using the mic.

  • Lavalier

Lavalier Microphone is a small mic that can be hanged on the clothing so that it captures the audio of the person talking more clear. These can be seen used more in film production because it offers a portable and Hands-Free solution to the bigger and more complex mics with the size also playing a role for being hardly noticeable. The quality of it might not be as good compared to the other types of mics but it is good enough to be able to capture the voice of a person talking with an alright quality. Another downside of the mic can be the Power. These types of mics use batteries to be charged and powered in order to function which would require you to bring in extra batteries for this situation.

  • Condenser

This type of mic is more sensitive which allows it to capture more detail within an audio recording. It offers the person to record more sound within a recording while still being understandable and distinguishable, which allows for proper recording in different sceneries and environments. Compared to the Lavalier mic, it is instead connected via a cable which eliminates the need to bring batteries every time you'll be using the mic. It also has the option of being able to increase the output volume but that of course requires more power.

  • Cardioid

A cardioid microphone is a type of mic that can capture audio in a bubble area. This means that any audio outside the bubble will be barely heard and often wont be noticed at all. This is good for when you're recording a podcast and all you need the listener to hear is the people talking within the podcast. With such an upside, it means that if you want something to be heard, it will need to be within the range of the bubble. This makes it un-suitable for filmmaking since the mic will need to be visible all the time and someone will need to hold onto it.

Techniques

Microphone placement can play a big role for making an audio recording and for being out of shots while still recording audio. The distance of the mic will also determine on how far away an object/person is which also determines the distance of the sound. When filming in a specific place the ambient sounds can play a big role to set the scene. Like for example if you're recording in or near a forest you would probably hear birds chirping or leaves being pushed by the wind. This would make the viewer have a feel of calmness for the area and picturing the place as a peaceful location. But if you add the sound of bush shacking, the viewer would think that there is danger nearby.

Role of Foley Artists

A role of a Foley Artist is to make existing or non-existing sounds for a film. To make a Foley track you have to use existing objects in a certain way to create a different sound. For example, in Quiet Place they used the snapping sound of crab legs for the walking sound of the monster. Another example can be with the monsters ear opening which is the sound of lettuce cracking. Some Foley sounds can be made with more obvious or don't need to be recorded separately on two different audio tracks.

Sound Format

Sound formats for audio are the format of which the audio track is exported and listened to. Different formats vary in quality and size with some of them being most popularly used and some of them being used least. The format names are: WAV, AIFF, PCM, FLAC, MPEG, WMA, MP3. The most used sound format is MP3 which offers the best audio quality and best space, while PCM is the very first and oldest format.

Storage

The use of storage depends on what the people chose to use but every way of sharing such storage has its own upside and downside. Using a flash drive allows you to move files around with you but it doesn't have very high storage and can get lost easily. Saving work on a hard drive or an SSD allows you to open files faster and store a large quantity of them but cannot be moved around easily. Saving it on a cloud will allow you to share the files with different people but it could take time to upload to the cloud and not everyone might have internet to use the cloud.

Compression

Compression is used to reduce the size of the file which not only saves space but if you were required to upload or download, the time needed will be reduced. This is a must do when sharing files around or when you need to save some space on your computer. This doesn't always happen since it depends on the on the file structure itself.

Size versus Quality

There are two types of compression that can be executed which are lossy and lossless compression. Lossy compression compresses a file while keeping the original intact after decompressing the file. The file size decrease is based on the structure of the file itself which means that not every file will have reduced size. On the other hand, Lossy compressions compresses the file way more but with a downside of having the chance to loose the original structure of the file. So the best option for compression will be the Lossy compression since it saves space while keeping the same quality.
