M1 - Legal and Ethical Issues

Introduction

This report will cover some of the issues that the production may face if things are done incorrectly. This can serve as a guideline to avoid said issues by listing what issues can potentially happen. I will be listing different legal and ethical issues that will be separated in their own sections.

Legal

Legal issues are made to protect the creation of media work and users data. This is to ensure that everyone is able to distribute with less of a problem knowing that there are set rules that can affect the person breaking them. For the soundtrack of my Animation, it can face many of the legal issues if they are not addressed or avoided. The type of issues that I can face during production are:
  • Copyright - In short, Copyright ensures protection on work. In case anyone steals work and claims as theirs, you can sue them for copyright or give them different options like removing the copyrighted material or ask them for credits. This won't affect me as much since I'll be making all of the assets myself, but to solidify that I can take multiple pictures of me producing the audio material and use it as evidence if I were to face a potential issue.
  • Slander - This law comes in effect if a person spreads wrong information about a person. If someone records an imitation of someone to claim that they are doing something bad, this is when the rule of Slander strikes. Since my animation is mostly sound effects and instruments, this won't be an issue within the animation soundtrack.
  • Intellectual Property Act - This rule allows for the persons property to be protected under this law. Example if there is a private music that has been captured by accident, it then has to be removed from the recording entirely or redo everything.

 Ethical

Ethical issues are more about what can damage public safety or privacy. This can range from privacy issues or to more restricted content being heard to those that aren't meant to have access to. Same as legal issues, if one of the issues is reached it could bring it to a point where the entire project needs to be taken down. These are some of the issues which i could face during production:
  • Explicit Language - This is when there are slurs or offensive words are potent in a project. This could affect the project since my target audience ranges from 13 and older teenagers. If I were to include such language, I will need to put a clear warning at the beginning of the video to inform the viewer that such language is present.
  • Violence - Similar to explicit language, violence can be present in sound by giving clear identifications of people getting harmed or even making foley sounds of such harm. The solution is the same to explicit language and I either have to not include it at all, or put a clear warning in the beginning to inform the viewer.
  • Discrimination - If a political opinion or any other opinion on a popular subject is given, not every would be happy to agree with the person. This can only be present if the theme of the subject is about giving each other their opinions.
